Introduction to Glassmaking
About this experience
Working with state-of-the-art equipment and professional glassmakers, this Glassmaking Experience for One has all you need for an exciting and unusual experience you’ll never forget. You’ll be working with hot molten glass straight from the furnace so you’ll need extreme attention to detail and a steady pair of hands as well as creativity to master this skill.
You’ll learn what the equipment in the studio is used for and how to work safely in a challenging environment. You’ll even have the chance to create your own piece of glass work to keep. Your work will need to be left overnight in order to anneal, so it will need to be delivered to you at a later date. This is very much a hands-on experience and you will be joined by other students to work as a team with your tutor. One thing’s for sure, you’ll never look at a glass vase in the same way again.

What happens on the day?
On arrival at the centre, you’ll be greeted by your tutor and introduced to the other participants in your small group. Your tutor will guide you and up to three others through the basics of working with hot glass and you will become familiar with the tools and equipment needed to master this skills. You will move quickly onto gathering glass from the furnace, shaping it and applying colour.
These new skills will enable you to make an ornamental piece, such as a paperweight, and towards the end of your day, there will be a demonstration and introduction to glass blowing.
Please note: Any glass items made by you will have to be annealed overnight, so they cannot be taken away at the end of the day. Your glass can be forwarded at a cost of £20 payable on the day, if for any reason the glass does not survive annealing, the £20 cost of grinding, packing and shipping will be refunded back to you. Unfortunately Glass work cannot be kept for collection.

“Molten”
A fantastic experience from start to finish. Clear and friendly tutoring and no question too silly to be answered. I felt that we were given plenty of time to create a paperweight and cannot wait to see the finished item. Thank you to our tutors who were very patient with us on an extremely hot day.
“Fantastic!”
I went with a couple of friends for one of their birthdays and we had such a good day! Such an amazing thing to try we just had the best time! The girls glass blowing example at the end was out of this world - so impressive, we watched them make a wine glass, and the teamwork that went into it, amazing!! I'd love to do more - Loved learning a new skill. Thanks so much to the team! Was a fab day :)
