What happens on the day?
On arrival you’ll be greeted by your professional instructor and join the rest of your small group (up to two other participants) before making your way to the lakes. After a short safety briefing, you will start your fly fishing lesson by assembling your equipment and learning about the tackle you will be using during the session. You’ll examine the different types of flies available and get an understanding of the types and weights of lines used in this sport before moving on to the art of casting.
Learn how to put out an overhead cast and shoot line whilst you're assessed by your instructor at a rate that is comfortable to both you and the rest of the group. You’ll enjoy a break before heading back for some more fishing.
Using the techniques you learned earlier in the lesson, you will then try your hand at casting on your own, using wet or dry flies to try and catch some of the hard-fighting rainbow trout that populate the lakes. If you are lucky enough to hook a fish, your instructor will be on hand to help you handle it and teach you how to play and land the fish. You will then learn how to release your fish carefully back into the water or should you wish to take home and eat what you have caught, you will be shown how to dispatch it humanely and given cooking tips before you leave.

“Really enjoyable few hours”
Thank you to Ian for a really interesting and enjoyable morning learning to fly fish. As an absolute fishing novice, Ian’s patience was very much appreciated and although I caught nothing, it was very satisfying to learn a new skill.
“A great day out. ”
I was given a fly fishing lesson as an experience day. You don’t need any experience to do this course and David the tutor was great, very personable and very good at teaching our group how cast properly resulting in one of the group catching a trout. If you want to learn to fly fish in fabulous surroundings with a great tutor then I can recommend this course.
