What happens on the day?

Your tour will begin at the city’s Victorian Mercat Cross, and after meeting your tour guide you’ll be led through the streets and alleys of Edinburgh’s Old Town on your way up to the Royal Mile. Then it’ll be time to go underground. Led by your cloaked guide, you’ll explore beneath the city’s famous streets in the famous haunted Blair Street Underground Vault. Overview

Enjoy a picturesque stroll through the paved streets of Edinburgh’s Old Town. All is not as it seems as you explore the murkier side of Edinburgh’s long and famous history. With this ghostly guided tour, you’ll venture below the ancient alleyways and into the famous haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults.

Your spookily cloaked guide will regale you with fantastically horrifying tales of the city’s past. Once storage areas for businesses and shops in the area, the vaults were transformed into slums and the city’s red-light district, with more than a grisly tale or two. You’ll hear of the torrid conditions, rampant crime and unsettled spirits as you’re treated to a flavour of life, and death, in Old Edinburgh.

Above ground, you’ll explore the streets of Old Town, visiting the shadowy closes and claustrophobic alleyways off the Royal Mile. While you’ll see the streets in the safety of daylight, once you venture underground, the vaults always lie in shadow!

Made me scared of something I don't believe in!

Our guide, Helena, was absolutely fantastic and the way she told the stories made me feel in that moment terrified. I don't even believe in ghosts but the suspense she created and the way she told the stories made me really indulge in the experience. I highly recommend!

Really interesting tour

Quirky tour of some of Edinburgh. Full of stories and drama from the guide. Quite cheesy, with some audience participation but really interesting facts about a stunning cities deadly/dirty past. Underground vaults were a must see part of the tour. So much history in one place.

Mercat Ghost Tour Edinburgh

Both my wife and I had a great day on this Tour. Our tour guide was Artemis. She did a wonderful job in creating an amazing and vivid description of Edinburgh in the 18th Century. The vaults were interesting and were made so by our in character guide. Thank you Mercat Tours !!

One must-do thing in Edinburgh....

This walking tour has all the 'F's...Fun, Fascinating and Fhought Provoking! Our guide Anna was engaging and knowledgable. Without spoiling the nature of the walk, we spent some time initially finding about the violent side of Edinburgh old town, found out about how people used to live then...explored the haunted catacombs. Anna was always reassuring but there were a few facts that made the blood run cold!

Highly entertaining historical tour

An excellent evening out. Our guide Alun was great, very entertaining and amusing. The stories were a mix of history and ghost stories. The tour very much focused on the storytelling element, so there weren't any costumed ghosts jumping out or anything, which I liked.

It was ok

We come form York and have been on quite a few ghost walks etc in the past. This tour was a slight disappointment if I'm honest and consisted mainly of a walk around in some recently discovered cellars. Would have been better if like on some other tours there was live actors and people jumping out.
