Choosing an AM or PM session, kick things off with a safety briefing before enjoying a guided tour of the engine receiving an introduction to the various controls and gauges. You’ll spend nine miles firing the engine and a further nine miles driving whilst gaining a deep understanding of the engine’s workings.

What happens on the day?
On arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed by the instructor ready for your steam train driving experience. Kick things off with an introductory booklet as well as a safety and technical session in a classroom. Then it’s time to hit the rail.
You’ll be given a guided tour of the engine, receiving an introduction to the various controls and gauges. Next, enjoy nine miles firing the engine and a further nine miles driving the locomotive. At the end of the session, you’ll be given a certificate to commemorate your experience as well as free membership for a year.

Participant guidelines
- Minimum age: 18
- For safety and comfort all participants need to be:
Reasonably fit with food eyesight and hearing and have full use of both hands
Unaided, be able to climb a 6ft vertical ladder with widely spaced rungs and into and out of a locomotive cab safely
Able to withstand a locomotives hard ride and an area that is hot and noisy with coal dust and ash blowing around. Those with heart, respiratory or back problems may find the course difficult and are advised to seek medical advice before booking.
Able to understand all safety procedures given at the start of the experience, to retain that information and be able to react positively to it during the course. - The experience content, equipment used and restrictions may vary
Availability
Your voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Please book and take your experience before the expiry date.
The experience is available Fridays and Saturdays during the year.
We recommend you book at least 4 weeks in advance to ensure that dates are available. All bookings are subject to availability.
Please allow 2hrs 30 mins for the full experience, which includes the safely briefing at the beginning.
What about insurance?
The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.
