What happens on the day?
London Beer Lab runs brewing workshops for up to five groups simultaneously. You and the rest of your group will be assigned your own brew station, designed to brew roughly 20 litres of beer. You’ll be helped by experts to craft your own recipe, targeting any particular style or characteristic that you’re looking for. With a recipe in hand, you’ll weigh out your grains before letting them steep in hot water. You’ll be taken through the theory of the brewing process, learning what happens at each step, while sampling different malts and talking about the differences and effects of processes.
You’ll discuss the importance of hops, with plenty of opportunity to smell different types to choose the right one for your brew, as well as learning about the different yeast types available. You’ll go through all the stages of brewing together, from boiling and adding hops, cooling and transferring to the fermenters. You’ll take a gravity reading for the alcohol percentage, before adding yeast. Your beer will now reside there for roughly 3 to 4 weeks, before you return to bottle it. Once bottled, your beer will take a week to carbonate.
