What clothes should I wear to a spa?
Although some spas have a dress code for selected areas such as restaurants, there is usually no need to worry about your choice of outfit. Spas want their guests to be as comfortable as possible, so if you would prefer to arrive in non-restrictive garments, such as gym wear or lounge wear then that will be absolutely fine. After this, you will change and spend most of your time in a robe anyway.
What type of footwear should I wear?
Most spas will provide slippers or flip-flops for you to wear during your visit, but if in doubt you can always bring your own. However, if you do bring your own slippers, their use may be restricted in certain areas of the spa due to hygienic reasons. If you are unsure what to take with you, it’s always best to ask when you book your appointment.
Do I need to bring a robe with me?
You will not need to bring a robe with you to a spa, as most will have these ready for you when you arrive. Depending on the treatments you receive, you may be offered a new robe if one gets damp or dirty. The same also goes for towels as these should be provided for you, meaning you won’t have to worry about having to wash them afterwards.

What to wear underneath a robe?
This depends upon which treatments you have booked and the facilities you will be using. In general, you should wear swimwear or underwear underneath a robe. You may well spend much of your day switching between the swimming pool, jacuzzi or steam room, so it makes sense to have your swimwear already on. If your treatment such as a massage requires full or partial nudity, you will be given time to undress before the treatment starts.
The practice of ‘draping’ is often used to enable full body massages where you will be covered by a large towel and the therapist will move the fabric to expose an area of your body to be treated, whilst ensuring your modesty. It’s important to remember that spas want their guests to feel as relaxed as possible, and you should only undress to the point where you feel comfortable, your therapists will have no problem with you raising any concerns.
What else to bring to a spa
You may wish to bring the following with you when you visit a spa:
- A change of clothes
- Swimwear
- Sportswear or gym attire
- Toiletries
Most spas will provide lockers so you can safely store your personal items and your change of clothes.
FAQs
Do you wear make up to a spa?
The main thing about going to a spa is to do what makes you feel comfortable, so if you would like to wear make-up to arrive in then feel free to. However, it’s best to remove your make-up before using the spa facilities. This is mainly because it will come off in the pool or steam room but it's also better for your skin to not have products on, meaning the facilities can work their cleansing magic. If you have a facial as part of your spa day, then your therapists will remove any make-up before starting the treatment in order to let the products work and give your skin a proper cleanse.
